Why great strategy games often have terrible first hours
Strategy games on mobile have a rough job. They need to teach complex systems on a small screen without boring you to death, and most of them fail the first part.
Iron Dominion is a perfect case. Its opening hour is a slog of menus and half-explained mechanics, and plenty of people bounce off before it clicks. But push past that and you find one of the most satisfying expansion loops around.
I think the lesson is patience. If a strategy game has strong reviews but a rough tutorial, that's often a sign of depth rather than bad design. The rewarding systems just take a while to open up.
My tip: play a strategy game with the sound on and no rush. Read the tooltips, lose a couple of early matches on purpose, and let yourself understand why you lost. That's where the fun actually starts.
